Most interior designers find it difficult to design a small living room space. However, at VC Interiors, we take advantage of this limited space. In a small living room, you can make sure it is not wasted and remains compact. We have several tricks and tips that we regularly use to make small rooms look spacious like different ways of placing the furniture, curtain tricks, paint, etc. We go for furniture with legs to make sure that more of the floor can be seen which automatically makes the room look bigger. These tricks are not just limited to small rooms as turned wooden legs are a classic style that will look great in any room

Another one of our tricks is to use any vacant space as built-in storage. This can be an alcove or even a bay window. Another one of our easiest tricks to make your space look spacious is to incorporate soft and neutral colors. This feel gives your room a warm and cozy feeling.

One of the rules of decorating that we stand by is not to cram a small room with a lot of furniture. Instead, what we do is find a seating item that is proportional to the size of the client’s living room and add stools and ottomans for the extra seating area. They will take up less space compared to bulky furniture and can also prevent your room from looking cluttered. When it comes to furniture, we also go for stowaway furniture which you can easily store somewhere else when you do not need them. Another space-saving furniture hack is multifunctional furniture. You can go for sofas or futons that can be turned into beds for a guest who stays over or even as a lounge area.

Even though dark colors are trendy right now, it is difficult to incorporate them in a limited living room space. Light colors such as pale tones, white and cream can make your room look airy and light. This trick is especially good for rooms without many natural light sources. Light shades can make any small room cozy and inviting without having the effect of closing in. However, we steer away from bright shades of white and instead go for whites with green, grey, or taupe undertones. There is a myriad of shades of white which can make it difficult to choose one. Therefore, we use testers and samples and only go ahead with the paint after the client approves.

Natural light is another great way to make your room look airy. We make most of the natural light source in the living room by working on windows. Instead of using curtains, we go for shutters. They give you privacy yet give you enough light control without taking up space. Even if we use curtains, we go for light colors.

We have a non-conventional hack to make a space look bigger by painting the skirting boars the same color as the wall instead of going for the traditional white color. Painting the skirting boards can also make your room look taller. Painting it white can actually make it look out of place and odd in a small room. This will make it stand out from the color of the wall. This is more so in the cases when the rest of your home and room is on a darker color palette. Our hack will prevent the wall from looking divided and help it to look tall, big and spacious.

Even though you might want to introduce dark colors to your room, it may make your room look cluttered and cramped rather than looking cozy. Instead, what you can do is pick a warm and rich color as a backdrop of any wall, like behind the sofa for instance. Such a warm color can make your room look cozier without making it look small and you also get to incorporate a rich color.

Another old trick of ours that work in all rooms is mirrors. Using mirrors is one way to make your room have the illusion that it is bigger. You can even use a big mirror to cover an entire wall of your living room. By reflecting light, it will make your room seem spacious and also is a great interior décor addition. The color palette also has to be light shades so that along with the mirrors it makes your space look big.

If there is an outdoor area near your living room, you can use that as extra space, even if it is small or big. You can extend your living room to that area using doors that will open fully. This will open up the entire living room. Also creates a sense of freedom of movement from indoor space to outdoor space. You can choose matching furniture to make these two different rooms uniform so that the transition is seamless. When you can see that the outdoor space is just outside the living area, any small room will look spacious.

Lighting is the most important aspect to change the look of a room. In a small room, the lights should be located at different heights, should not be direct and should allow your eyes to move around the house. More light and importantly varied forms of lighting are important for a small living room.
