Kitchen Cabinet Material Ideas in Kerala

August 6, 2021 by vc_admin

Cabinetry is usually not given that much importance compared to the other structural elements of a kitchen. However, at VC Interiors, our interior designers conduct thorough research on kitchen cabinetry materials as they take up a substantial amount of your kitchen remodelling or building budget. Cabinets are one of the most used items in a kitchen and they need to be in good shape and durable in order for them to be functional. Therefore, at VC Interiors, we try to bring style as well as functionality when we choose kitchen cabinet materials for clients.

Normally, most interior designers go for solid wood when it comes to materials used in their residences. However, a major disadvantage to using solid wood is that they expand and contract over time. This does not make them the ideal material for kitchen cabinets, countertops, flooring, etc. At VC Interiors, we use engineered wood products as they are much more durable, reliable and affordable. Some of the other materials we use are medium-density fiberboard (MDF), plywood, hardwood, stainless steel, etc. Following are some of the materials we use and how they can benefit your kitchen cabinets.

  1. MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard

MDF is made from wood fibres that are recycled along with the resin. It is a high-grade composite material that is milled under high pressure. They come in one-piece frames with a centre cut out for the recessed panel. It is a dense and heavy material that has resembles the material used by IKEA for their various kitchen items. One of the reasons why they are preferred is because they are super resistant to cracking and peeling. They can also be easily painted over enabling you to change the entire look of your cabinets as and when you want. The MDF material is also smoother when compared to plywood.

  • Plywood

Over the past few years, plywood has become a popular choice of kitchen cabinet material among manufacturers. This is mainly because of the low cost of plywood. Another great benefit of this material is that it is more resistant to moisture than MDF giving more stability. Plywood boards are made by glueing wood piles on top of each other. For added protection, there is a plastic laminate coating, wood veneer or thermofoil coating.

  • Particleboard

Particleboard is the least conventional material when it comes to kitchen cabinet construction. They are made by combining wood chips and particles with an adhesive which is then fused together to make panels. This is not generally preferred because it does not offer stability. It’s made with shards of wood and the only thing holding everything in place is the glue. However, it is cheaper than plywood making it a good option for low-budget kitchen remodelling.

  • Stainless Steel

Stainless steel gives your kitchen a contemporary and minimalistic look. It is mostly used in professional kitchens. However, it has a major disadvantage. It is very difficult to clean scratches and fingerprints. But it does not contract or expand like wood making it suitable for places with a lot of moisture content.

  • Hardwood

Hardwood is considered to be one of the most durable materials, especially for kitchen cabinets. Hardwoods such as hickory or maple can even resist scratching and denting compared to walnuts and mahogany which are softwoods. It is slightly more expensive as it is highly durable and comes in high quality.

Another common domestic wood is cherry wood. It has a grain pattern all across and comes in rich colour. For a warm kitchen atmosphere, cherry wood would be perfect. Some other hardwood kitchen cabinet materials are oak, spruce, pine, birch and beech. These are on the expensive side. However, they are long-lasting making them cost-effective in the long run.

Usually, cabinets come in a ready-to-assemble form. VC Interiors offers a semi-custom option that gives you the opportunity to control the final look. While a lot of designers overlook the importance of drawers and make them with the same material used for the cabinetry, we use solid wood that is resistant to wear and tear from overuse. It is also used in solid wood or MDF.

Other than the material and structural integrity of the cabinets, we also give importance to cabinet doors. Cabinet doors are the most visible part of your kitchen cabinet and can change the character and look of your kitchen. We, therefore offer a wide variety of options. For clients who want a pop of colour in their kitchen, we go for MDF material as it is easier to be painted on. But they cannot be stained. For clients wanting a more natural look, we go for solid wood doors in a slab model. With all the wide range of options, it becomes easy to get fully functional and contemporary-looking kitchen cabinetry.
